Tonight I had dinner at The Rocket, Euston. I had been thinking about this for a while, because it’s on my way home from the library. And what I had: ‘screaming vegetarian’ burger (which comes with chips) and some wine. The burger had different kinds of vegetables and hazelnut in it – a pretty decent burger; although I think fried onion rings do make it a little on the fatty side – but then the rings, combined with the uncooked bun (yes, not the trendy thing to do I know) does make it taste a bit like a fish and chip shop burger, which brings back happy memories. I’m a big fan of hazelnut and lemon: two miraculous ingredients which add pizzaz to both sweet and savoury recipes. The chips were excellent, wine was fine, and the pub was okay with a bit of a grunge edge. All in all, £7 well spent (so cheaper than Gourmet Burger Kitchen).

So here was tonight’s dinner; from a place I like to go just near Waterstone’s bookshop, off Gower Street, called Planet Organic. It has some nice salads, cakes, warm foods and organic groceries; this is the Seaweed Salad which I got for a couple of pounds, the brand’s called Laura’s Idea. Quite okay, lots of carrot and kidney bean and a lemony bite to it. I purchased the cheesecake from the same range – it was a little disappointing (maybe because it looked so fun I had unrealistic expectations!) – was too oaty and bland. Gave me a good excuse to finish off the milk chocolate raisins however!

My favourite quick dinner!

You will need:
a couple of sticks of celery
some mushrooms
garlic
leek
chili powder or tabasco
tinned continental lentils
tinned or chopped up tomatoes
tomato paste
spaghetti

Put the water on to boil for the spaghetti
Chop up and saute ingredients in a fry pan – starting with leeks, garlic for a few minutes, and then celery and mushroom, finally adding tomatoes, a spoon or two of tomato paste and chili.

Let it simmer away while you put on the spaghetti.

When that’s done, strain the spaghetti, plate it and put the sauce on top.

If you have some basil – tear it up and throw it on. You may like this with parmesan too!

I’m a big believer in lots of chili in vegetarian pasta!

I would be interested too in good vegetarian pasta recipes without chili and garlic – for when one has guests over who can’t eat either!

This recipe was inspired by Flip Shelton – see link!

How to create a vegetarian version of this favourite? My way is to use a recipe by Rose Elliot in which continental lentils and walnuts create a hearty, chewy loaf. But I’m away from home at the moment, so I went on a search for a good pub version. Mission accomplished: the nut loaf roast to be had in the Prince Regent on Marylebone High Street of a Sunday, at less than £10, with a tangy beetroot relish and flavourful gravy, gets the thumbs up.
